The Three Most Common Feng Shui Mistakes I See in Singapore Homes

By Master Adrian Lo · 2 November 2026 · 6 min read

A BaZi chart reveals the elemental forces present at the moment of your birth.

Most people in Singapore first encounter BaZi through a friend’s recommendation or a moment of curiosity. They arrive expecting something between astrology and fortune-telling. What they find is something more grounded — a structured system built on Chinese cosmology, seasonal cycles, and the interaction of five elements. It is one of the most widely practised forms of Chinese metaphysics. For a BaZi reading, Singapore clients have turned to Master Lo since 2004 — making it one of the most established BaZi reading practices in the country.

Understanding even the basics of how BaZi works will change how you interpret a reading. And it will help you ask better questions.

THE STRUCTURE: FOUR PILLARS, EIGHT CHARACTERS

BaZi (八字) literally means “eight characters.” These eight characters come from your birth year, birth month, birth day, and birth hour — four pillars, each with two components: a Heavenly Stem (天干) above and an Earthly Branch (地支) below.

Each stem and branch maps to one of five elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water — and to a Yin or Yang polarity. The resulting combination is your chart: a unique signature of the energies present at your moment of birth.

“Think of the chart as a recipe. The same ingredients in different proportions create a completely different dish. Your chart shows your specific recipe — and the conditions in which it was made.”

Your BaZi chart is constructed from four pillars — year, month, day, and hour of birth.

WHAT THE DAY STEM REPRESENTS

In BaZi, the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar is especially important. It represents you — your core character, your natural tendencies, your fundamental energy type. Everything else in the chart is interpreted in relation to this one character.

For example, a person with a Yang Water Day Stem (壬) tends to be expansive, perceptive, and adaptive — but may also scatter energy if the chart lacks structure. A Yang Fire Day Stem (丙) person tends to be warm, generous, and visible — but may burn out if the chart overheats.

This is why a BaZi reading is always specific. Two people born on the same day but at different hours can have very different charts — and very different life experiences.

Luck Pillars: The Changing Seasons of Your Life

Beyond the birth chart, there are Luck Pillars (大運) — ten-year cycles that layer over your chart as you age. Each pillar introduces new energies that interact with your natal chart, amplifying some things and suppressing others.

This is where a BaZi reading becomes genuinely useful for planning — particularly for clients in Singapore navigating career transitions, business decisions, or major life moves. If your next Luck Pillar strongly favours wealth generation, you know the coming years are times to act boldly. If the next pillar creates tension in your chart, you can prepare to move more carefully.

This is not about predicting events. It is about understanding the quality of time — and making better decisions within it.

If you would like to understand your own chart, I am happy to walk you through it in a consultation. The reading takes about 90 minutes, and many clients tell me it is one of the most useful conversations they have had.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

01

Four Pillars

BaZi (八字) is a classical Chinese metaphysical system that analyses your birth year, month, day, and hour to form a Four Pillars chart — eight characters in total.

02

The Day Stem

The Day Stem (the Heavenly Stem of your birth day) represents your core character. Everything else in the chart is interpreted in relation to it.

03

Luck Pillars

Luck Pillars are ten-year cycles that shift the energies acting on your natal chart. They are where a BaZi reading becomes most useful for timing decisions.

04

Not Fixed Fate

A BaZi reading does not predict fixed outcomes. It shows you the kind of energy you carry — and the timing of when different types of activity are most supported.

05

Birth Time Matters

Two people born on the same day but at different hours can have entirely different charts. Accurate birth time makes a meaningful difference to the quality of a reading.

06

Annual Energies

In addition to Luck Pillars, each year brings its own energy layer. Understanding both levels together gives a more precise and useful picture of timing.

BAZI CONSULTATION

A BaZi reading maps the energy patterns in your birth chart and identifies the timing most favourable for decisions around career, relationships, and major life transitions.

“Every consultation begins with listening. Tell me what is on your mind — and we will find the right place to start. There is no hard-sell, and no obligation.”
